PEMF THERAPY FOR TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES?

Did you know? Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability among children and young adults in the United States. Each year an estimated 1.5 million Americans sustain a TBI. As a consequence of these injuries, 230,000 people are hospitalized and survive (National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, 1999)

Traumatic brain injury is usually caused by extreme shaking or blows to the head. All these cases require immediate medical attention, but not all of them are treated in the same way. Depending on the severity of the damage and the symptoms, some TBI patients may need surgery, while others may be given the therapy that only includes rest and PEMF for brain injury.

The use of pulsed electromagnetic fields early in the TBI healing process helps to decrease one of the major aspects of the injury: inflammation in the brain.

Inflammation is dangerous in the brain because it causes all sorts of short-circuiting of brain function eventually leading to short-term and potentially long-term symptoms, such as headaches, dizziness, depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc.

Thankfully,  additional evidence now reveals that pulsed electromagnetic field therapies are not only useful for symptom management but also can potentially heal the brain and reverse the long-term effects of brain damage (NCBI, 2020).

Finally, magnetic therapy for a brain injury can help pave the way for a speedy recovery. When combined with proper rest, PEMFs reduce the time it takes for the patient to return to an everyday routine by stimulating the body’s healing mechanisms to function optimally.
